So, I guess there are a couple of things from all of this.
1. Improve the error message re the non-functional self-tests, which has already been merged. Thanks so much!
2. Seems like the jtag-pinout applet gives up too quickly, or at least is missing this particular instance. Happy to test any changes/improvements should there be any.

Of course, I don't know how relevant an i.mx28 device is to those who understand the jtag-pinout code/logic/implementation, so I'm not *expecting* anything. Just stating willingness to contribute where I am able to.
