I've got a silly question, perhaps a Friday brain fart

I've got a 32-bit event/notification counter, and an 8-bit event/notification acknowledge response. 

Suppose I've got a u8 that represents the lower 8 bits of a u32. And I want to test if it is between 0 and 10 counts "newer" than of a different u32 value.
Wraparound has to be dealt with.

Are there any tools or techniques for making these types of lossy/wraparound comparisons more ergonomic?
