basically the things it has going for it are:
* it is absolutely fucking cheap as dirt (assembled EVK, including external flash, for $5; chips qty1 for <$1)
* it is actually possible to buy them (Mouser has 11,300 in stock)
* the PIO state machine is pretty cool and has been used to do some astonishing stuff
